Last night was our ward's Trunk or Treat. When did this become an established tradition? When I was a kid we had one shot at getting all the candy we could. One night. Two feet. And endless streets to cover. Now with the Trunk or Treat, I feel very little obligation to take my kids out for more than a half hour. They got plenty of candy last night. Halloween will more of just a formality than anything. Another upside to the pre-party is that in just 4 days time I can effectively get rid of all the undesirable candy in one fell swoop. Yes, I could throw it away. But who ever did that? Don't we all hang on to the candy rejects until Christmas?
Here's the gang before the sugar binge. I fed them before we went because I knew all the sweets would be a major distraction from the hot dogs they provided. Why is the menu at Halloween always hot dogs and/or chilli? What genius made that norm? A candy tummy ache isn't enough, let's overload them with cholesterol and gas and then give them candy.

We had the dog, a throw back I made from Mr. M's second Halloween. Princess was Snow White. I thought we were breaking with the Princess tradition this year. But two things happened. She heard the word "party" and immediately realized the vetranarian costume we had planned didn't live up to her party standards (it didn't require high heals and the coat wouldn't "spin") and the dad's old white coat was way too big. So she chose Snow White and couldn't have been happier. She's a princess through and through! And finally, Harry Potter, which was a very popular costume this year. I counted 3. Plus we had the whole Harry gang there which was such a treat for me. Dumbledore, Hagrid, Hermoine, Harry, Professor Umbridge and Professor Trewlany. I wish I had snapped a photo, but I'm a stranger in this new ward and don't know these people even when they are disguised in costume.

The real treat for Little C was this train whistle, which combined two of his great loves: trains and noise. He held onto it all night. Is it me or is the candy this year plastic? I usually can't keep my hands away from the spoils, but they hold no charm this year (no I'm not pregnant). I'm sure if I eat just a few more pieces I can get in the groove.
Tomorrow: Pumpkin carving. Come back to see the mess!
