Little Ditty

There's a little tune I sing to my children as babies.  My dad sang it to my little sister.  Maybe he made it up, I don't know.  It's catchy and sweet.  But the last few notes are a little off, according to my pitch-perfect husband.  But it has good memories.  I remember Katie singing along with my dad.  He would sing all the words and she would sing the last one of each line...

I love Katie, yes I {do}
I love Katie, all the way {through}
I love Katie's big brown {eyes}
For she is my special sweetie {pie}

The last word of each line would always come out of her mouth with the forced syllable of a toddler, trying to say a word at the right moment.

I've tried to get each of my kids to follow tradition.  But none of them caught on.  Not until Honey.  The last couple of nights, when I pause, he'll sing the with a little prompting.

I love him, yes I {do}.

I do it with my kids too! It has such good memories for me. Jane and Elliot both sing the last word, although Elliot has a harder time with the "pie" part. But I say "precious" instead of "special". Have I been singing it wrong all this time?

Grandma Packard made that song up. I sing it to my kids all the time and they LOVE it. I am not quite sure what it is about this particular song that they love more than the others, but it is cute. My mom sang it to us growing up too. :o)

I must confess I made it up after your mom was born. I guess it was suppose to be a lullaby, but it works any time of day.

Last line: 'Cause she is my sweetie pie!

Always love your blogs. . .G:ma

I love this; it brings back such good memories! It's been so fun through the years to hear all the siblings singing it; I've heard Greg sing it on multiple occasions, too.

Dad always sang "precious sweetie" to me, but of course either the original or "special sweetie" work wonderfully.

In any case, I'm so glad you mentioned this. It's reminded me to carry on the tradition with baby boy.

It reminds me what a truly wonderful life we have. I have such fond memories of each of you as a toddler, young child, teenager and adult. Each one of you makes me so happy.
