Room for One

I had been feeling the need to move Mr. M into his own room for a while now.  But because the logical room to place him in was Honey's, I was resisting the change.  But recent events with Mr. M made the move seem more important than any reservation I had about putting Honey and Little C in the same room (more on that in Post Script).

We really wanted to do something special for M, since the last time he had his own room was at the age of 18 months.  I wanted something a little edgey and different.  Something that would transition well into his teenage years.

I had a vision of putting horizontal paneling on one of the walls in the room.  A little risky, since the only information I could find on it via the web were discussions of people wanting to try it, but not really knowing how to execute.

Here's a couple before shots:

Sad, non-nursery room.  Yet to have a fully decorated nursery ... oh well!
Trying out colors on one of the walls.

I found pine paneling, 8 feet long in a six pack at Lowe's for $10/pk.  Pretty good, I thought since they were pre-sanded and all.  They had a tongue and groove system, so putting them on the wall was actually very easy.  I would nail up a board with DH.  Then above the board I'd put the next board in the groove, flush with the other wall, mark where the cut should be, cut and then slide the cut board into the finish one row.  Hopefully that makes sense!

Boards hung and primed!

 Picking color for the paneling.
The trim in the room is "Modern White"
the walls Valspar Oatlands Subtle Taupe in Satin and
the boards is Valspar Woodlawn Colonial Gray in Semi-Gloss.
After:

I dry brushed the gray paint on the walls so the primer showed through on the edges and gave it the unfinished look I wanted.  I love that the imperfections in the paneling still show through, like grain and knots.  DH said it looked the side of an old beach house.  Guess I can't get the Southern California side out of me!

The little yellow side table was the brown table above in the before photos.  I'm going to incorporate more accents of yellow with the decorating (which is yet to be done ... I wanted to get these photos up anyways).

P.S.  How did the change go over with Honey moving in with Little C?  NOT WELL.  Here is how we spent the week:

Every night Little C would cry that he didn't want Honey in the room with him because "he makes so much noise and Mr. M was so quiet!"  It progressed where Little C was getting tummy aches and crying at every bedtime.  They fell asleep later and later and were getting up earlier and earlier!  A lot of cranky days were had.  Finally I told DH it was ridiculous, and we had plenty of space to make it work for everyone.  Because Little C still wanted to share a room, Miss A gladly welcomed his little bed into her room (she's been bugging me for years that she's lonely).  And Honey will be moving into my craft room this weekend (maybe I will get my nursery after all ... for a couple of months anyways :).  Phew.  This has been a process!

Very cute! I like the bedding you ended up with. I know you're incorporation more yellow, but I really like the colors of the bedding with the bed/wall. Good call! Sorry the room sharing went badly. At least Miss A is an attentive sister and loves having her little brothers around! They'll get there ... won't they?

Mr. M's room is so handsome. Nice work!

So who is in the big play room now? Or did Ana go to Little C's room. I need a flow chart...

No crafty roooom??

Good job! The wall looks great, and I think it will transition very well into teenager-hood.

Very fine product, indeed. It looks like the perfect tween/teen room. The most important question: does Mr. M like it?

I'm also sorry the transition didn't go as hoped. Poor Honey is probably just so excited that he's graduating into being a big kid and gets to hang out with C. Maybe not quite yet, though.

P.S. I love the DH sleep face. Classic.

Love the finished product; the walls look great.:-) Ahh, the problem with room-sharing. I had the same experience when my youngest shared room with her older sister. Never-ending complaining.:-)
